Groom speech ideas – need help writing your speech?
Groom speeches are usually the emotional anchor of the wedding speeches — thankful, reflective, and directed at the bride. Here’s the typical structure:
1. Opening
- Thank guests for coming
- Thank whoever hosted/paid for the wedding
- A light joke or icebreaker often works well here to settle nerves (yours and the room’s) before things get sentimental
2. Thank Yous
- Thank your parents for raising you and supporting the day
- Thank your new in-laws for welcoming you into their family and for raising your wife
- Thank the wedding party — best man, groomsmen, bridesmaids — for their help
- Thank your now-wife’s parents specifically for “giving her away” / their blessing
3. Reflecting on How You Met / Fell in Love
- The story of how you met, or your first impression of her
- What drew you to her — this can be funny, sweet, or both
- A story that shows her character or what made you fall for her
4. What She Means to You
- The emotional core of the speech — how she’s changed your life, supported you, made you better
- Specific moments where she showed up for you
5. Acknowledging the Wedding Party
- Many grooms use this speech to also toast the bridesmaids and thank the best man/groomsmen properly, since the best man usually speaks after and can’t easily thank himself
- A line or two of appreciation for them fits naturally here
6. Looking Forward
- What you’re excited about for married life together
- A promise or hope for the future
7. The Toast
- Turn to her directly for the closing lines
- Raise a glass — often “to the bridesmaids,” “to the parents,” and finally “to my wife” or “to us”
Tone notes:
- Often the longest speech of the day (4-6 minutes), since it covers thank yous + love story + toasts to others
- Balances humor (especially early) with heartfelt sincerity (especially toward the bride)
- Traditionally the groom speaks before the best man, so he often sets up jokes the best man can pick up on
IDEAS:
Thank you all so much for being here today, and for sharing this with us. To our parents — thank you for everything you’ve done to raise us, support us, and get us to this moment. And to Jess’s mum and dad — thank you for welcoming me into your family, and for raising the woman who is now my wife.
I also want to thank our wedding party — you’ve all been incredible, and we’re so lucky to have you standing up here with us today.
Now, onto the reason we’re all actually here.
Jess is the great love of my life. She brings out the best in me. She makes me want to be a better man — to grow up, to keep growing, to be everything she needs. I don’t think I fully understood what that meant until I met her.
We have so much fun together. I love her crazy joy — the way she throws herself into life. I love the way she loves people, so openly and so fully. And I love the way she loves me.
I love our adventures together — all the places we’ve been, all the memories we’ve made. And some of my favourite moments aren’t even the big trips. They’re the small ones — like when we’re out mountain biking, and I look over, and there she is. My best friend.
Because that’s what this is built on, at the end of the day. Our friendship. And I know that friendship is going to be the foundation of everything good in our lives together — because even when the hard stuff happens, even when life gets crappy, she can still make me laugh. That’s rare. That’s everything.
Jess, thank you for being the best part of my life. I can’t wait to keep building this with you — the adventures, the quiet nights, all of it.
So if everyone could raise a glass — to the bridesmaids, for looking after Jess so well; to our parents, for everything they’ve given us; and finally, to my wife — to Jess.
Cheers!
IDEAS:
I want to start by thanking each and every one of you for being here today. Your presence means the world to us.
To my beautiful wife, I don’t know where to begin. You are my rock, my best friend, and my soulmate. From the moment I met you, I knew that my life would never be the same. You have brought so much joy, love, and happiness into my life, and I am forever grateful for you.
Today, as I stand here, I am reminded of all the memories that we’ve shared together – the late night conversations, the inside jokes, and the moments of pure bliss. And now, as we begin this new chapter in our lives, I promise to love, cherish, and support you always.
I want to also take a moment to thank both of our parents for their love, guidance, and support throughout our lives. We are who we are today because of you, and we are grateful for all that you’ve done for us.
Finally, I want to end by saying that I am excited for the adventures that lie ahead. Together, we will build a life filled with love, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Thank you again for being here to celebrate with us. I am honoured to call you my wife and I love you more than words can express. Cheers to a lifetime of happiness together!”
