Here is a good jumping off point to get you started in writing your ‘Father of the bride‘ speech.
Opening
- Welcome the guests and thank them for coming (you’re often the first speaker of the day, so this welcome carries extra weight)
- Introduce yourself
- A warm, sincere opener — humor is welcome but this speech tends to lead with emotion more than jokes
Thank Yous
- Thank guests for traveling/attending
- Thank anyone who helped organize or pay for the wedding
- Acknowledge your wife/the bride’s mother and her role in raising your daughter and planning the day
Reflecting on Your Daughter
- This is the heart of the speech — a memory or story from her childhood, something that shows who she was growing up – keep it short but personal
- Common themes: a moment of her independence, kindness, stubbornness (affectionately), a dream she chased, or simply what kind of daughter she’s been
- Many fathers speak about “watching her grow up” — from a little girl to the woman standing there today. It’s a cliché because it works; make it specific with your own memory rather than generic
Welcoming the Groom
- When you met him, or the moment you knew he was right for her
- What you’ve seen him bring into her life — how he treats her, how he makes her happy
- This is often where you formally welcome him into the family
Reflecting on the Couple
- What you’ve observed about them together
- A blessing, hope, or piece of advice for their marriage — as a father, you’ve earned the right to offer wisdom here
The “Giving Away” Moment (optional but common)
- Some fathers include a line acknowledging that he’s not “losing” a daughter but “gaining” a son, or that he’s handing over the job of taking care of her to someone he trusts
- This can be genuinely moving if done sincerely, but skip it if it doesn’t feel like your style — it’s traditional, not mandatory
The Toast
- A warm, often emotional closing line
- Raise a glass to the couple
Tone notes:
- This is typically the most emotional speech of the day — don’t be afraid to let it show
- 3-5 minutes is standard
- If you think you might tear up, it’s fine to say so in advance (“bear with me, I knew this one might get me”)
- A little humor near the start can help settle nerves (yours and the room’s) before the sentimental parts land
SPEECH IDEA:
Thank you all for being here today. For those who don’t know me, I’m Jess’s dad — and today is a day I’ve been imagining for a very long time.
Jess is my one and only daughter, and she is the light of my life. It wasn’t until she came into my life that things felt complete. I understand now what people mean when they say “daddy’s girl” — because that’s exactly what she was.
When she was little, she would follow me around no matter what job I was doing. She’d come and sit with me, chat away, ask me a hundred questions about whatever I was working on. I don’t think she’ll ever know how much I treasured those moments.
There’s one memory I’ll never forget. She’d been traveling in Europe, and she surprised me when she got back. I burst into tears like a baby. I remember thinking — how did I get to be such a lucky dad?
Because that’s the truth of it. I have been the luckiest dad around, to have Jess as my daughter.
I remember when she was just a baby, holding her, thinking about the day I’d get to walk her down the aisle to the love of her life. And even then, I had a dream about who that person would be — that he would be someone truly worthy of that role. Someone worthy of her.
Jake, you are worthy of that position.
I have watched you take care of my daughter the same way I do. I have watched the way you show up for her, look after her, and love her — and I want you to know, Jess chose so well when she chose to build a life with you.
So Jake — please cherish her. Take care of her, the way I know you already have been. And Jess — my girl, the light of my life — I could not be prouder or happier for you.
If everyone could raise a glass — to Jess and Jake. May your life together be full of the same joy, laughter, and love that Jess has brought into every room she’s ever walked into.
Cheers!
